It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1979〔 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.〔 ==History== Sherman City was platted in 1870 and boomed with the increase in local lumber trade. The Sherman City Union Church was built in 1871 as the "Guard of American Revolution Hall." A tornado in 1878 leveled most of the town, but this building survived. In 1898, the building was refitted as a nondenomination church, and served in that function and as a social gathering place. Lumbering declined in the early 1900s, and the rown began declining.
